UPDATED: Dallas radio station 105.3 changes format to all-sports talk radio, call letters to KRLD-FM

24

Radio station KLLI-FM (105.3) is changing its format to an all-sports talk radio station, and has dismissed afternoon drive-time DJ Russ Martin, replacing him with The Ben and Skin Show, which had been on in the middle of the day.

UPDATE: The station has also changed its call letters to KRLD-FM to make it more in line with their partnership with KRLD-AM, the all-news station.

Good riddance to Russ Martin. I"m sure he'll pop up somewhere else. Not sure why they think competing with the Ticket and ESPN will be successful but at least Russ is off the air.

Collin Gouldin, says:

Because it's a FM station. So it will have further broadcast distance and better quality. Also, the contract for the cowboys broadcast is up. If they land that it could be a big game changer.

Chris Kidd, says:

RMS was a worn out bit 3 years ago, why they kept him so long is a question many people had asked here and elsewhere. For 105.3, The Cowboys are a likely target, as they can opt-out at the end of this season with Cumulus. Also, the StarsRangers broadcasts maybe up for grabs as WBAP, I believe, is in their last season of contract with the stars, as well as the rangers being on KRLD already, which could setup some interesting simulcast opportunities..

I personally will miss the Russ Martin Show. I disn't listen to the radio except for that show. My drive home will be boring. I hope he gets picked up on another station.

ESPN is an FM station. 105.3 claims they will be sports without the BS. Which is basically what ESPN is. Which is basically why the Ticket slays them in the ratings. You can only talk about pure sports for so long, especially in the offseason.

Hedging their bets on taking the Cowboys from the Ticket is a pretty risky bet. Even so, Cowboys only play 5 months out of the year.

Either way, radio in this market is broken. This won't do much to change any of that.

Russ Vandeveerdonk, says:

Just to add, The new, " The Fan 105.3 FM" will also be the OFFICIAL STATION for, Nascar, NFL Playoffs and quite a few more things. Just watch, CBS know thier demographics and what DFW wants to hear.

Perhaps more NASCAR coverage b/c the Worldwide Leader nor the Ticket will talk about it.. Please talk NASCAR and you will have a day one listener!!

ESPN's signal is pretty weak.<br> Rjfk - CBS does NOT know what they're doing, and neither does anyone else in the radio industry right now, because like david said, the radio industry is in a world of hurt.

John McClelland, says:

I've been a fan of 105.3 since Jagger came on board, so it is good they're keeping their bread winner (they mentioned this morning their ratings were a lot higher than expected).

Maybe Russ Martin's ratings took a dive? I haven't seen them. They're saving a ton of money by canning him though.

I caught part of their new sports mid day show at lunch today. It sounded entertaining if you're wanting to hear about sports.

But hey! It's been a constant upswing for 105.3 since David Lee Roth was thrown off the airwaves. Not many stations can say they've had that kind of success.

Russ Vandeveerdonk, says:

Well Collin Gouldin, you are correct, just look at Sirius and XM and all that re-organizing stuff. AND WHY would they pay Howard Stern $100 million bucks for the rights to his show a few years back. Airwaves getting too crowded, are there too many choices to listen to? That is why I like Jagger, kinda real show and he is un-afraid to speak his mind on air.

Chris Kidd, says:

Russ and friends got into the same old tired schtick he's been doing since the eagle days(Turning off the mics, dropping words that sound like the n-bomb, blowing stuff up, ect..) It got tired and boring after awhile. Why they didnt can him 2 years ago is a question that should be asked.

sirius and xm don't even belong in the same conversation as over the air (normal) radio. They have YET to have a profitable year, and i doubt they ever will...

Chris Kidd, says:

Leykis is also seeing his syndication dissipate dramatically, as many of the stations that were syndicating his show where the "live/free" format stations CBS ran. Unlike russ, he's kept his money secure over the years and has weathered worse.

John McClelland, says:

Tom Leykis fascinates me. Mainly because he has made a career of having the exact same format to every single show 5 days a week- saying how much marriage sucks. How can you talk about that daily? Somehow, Leykis does.

No kidding, KRLD-FM. Gosh, I have listened to KRLD news since 1973 when it was on the car radio, as Ollie Mae, our family maid was driving us to the private catholic school way, way back in the day!
