The drama department at Cedar Valley College is titled Family Music Theatre because of their mission to provide family-friendly shows to the entire metroplex. This spring they will be presenting The Sound of Music from March 13 - 28.
If you never grew up watching this classic Julie Andrews flick, here is a synopsis: In Salzburg, Austria, Maria, a woman studying to become a nun, is sent from her convent to be the governess to seven children of a widowed naval commander, Captain Georg Ritter von Trapp. The children, initially hostile and mischievous, come to like her, and the woman finds herself falling in love with the captain. He was soon to be married to a baroness but marries Maria instead. Maria teaches the children singing. Meanwhile, the Nazis take power in Austria as part of the Anschluss, and want Captain von Trapp back in service. Music and lyrics are by Richard Rogers and Hammerstein II, and a book by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse.
Plus, if you want to be part of the show, the program is holding auditions January 12 & 13 inside the Cedar Valley College Performance Hall. For this, you must sing 16 bars of a Broadway song with piano (accompanist provided), cold read from script (if considered for principal role), and participate in an essential movement audition. Click here for more info on the audition process.
Here is a song from the film to get you in the mood. You know you miss Liesl:
