Greenville Avenue Area Business Association to award scholarships to Dallas ISD high school students

DALLAS — Students graduating from three Dallas ISD high schools will have the opportunity to win a $2,500 scholarship to the college of their choice thanks to support from The Greenville Avenue Area Business Association, (GAABA).

Recognizing the importance of public education, GAABA wishes to support Dallas ISD schools in the community. The organization has committed to provide scholarships valued at $2,500 to one graduating senior at each of the following high schools: Emmett J. Conrad, North Dallas and Woodrow Wilson.

"Our association is proud to be able to provide this financial assistance to three deserving high school students in our area who desire a higher education," said Jorge Levy, GAABA president and owner of Desperados Mexican Restaurant. "We believe it’s our responsibility to give back to the community that supports our area merchants, and we are pleased to have the opportunity to work with the Dallas ISD in providing these scholarships."

Students must show financial need, and must have applied to a college or university prior to filing the scholarship application. Applications are available from Dallas ISD school counselors at the three schools, or on the Web site at www.dallasisd.org/parents/scholarship, and must be postmarked by Thursday, March 12, 2009. Finalists will be interviewed in April and the scholarship winners will be announced in May.

The Greenville Avenue Area Business Association, (GAABA) is a non-profit organization comprised of more than 50 merchants primarily on Greenville Avenue from Park Lane south to Mockingbird. The association promotes the many varied businesses in the area and develops general awareness programs for the community. GAABA produces the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade each year. The parade is the largest event of its kind in North Texas and attracted more than 100,000 people in 2008. The 2009 St. Patrick’s Day Parade is scheduled for Saturday March 14, 2009.
