Arlington GM workers relieved by Bush bailout announcement

12

Workers at the General Motors assembly plant in Arlington expressed their relief on Friday (Dec. 19) that President Bush has allocated $9.4 billion to GM as a short-term financing bridge to keep the plant open and the workers churning out Escalades until March, when the next round of funding is up for consideration.

Merry Christmas, folks.

So, if the auto manufacturers don't turn things around they have to pay the money back? Where are they going to get the money to pay back the loans from?

Travis Bush, says:

You know, the auto manufacturers already have the skilled labor to do the kind of thing that Toledo has started. Many of the former or soon to be jobless auto workers have gone to work for new companies. Those companies, some very new, are making solar panels. The former auto workers are familiar with assembly line production and even many of the materials involved in the creation of solar panels.

Perhaps the auto makers should consider altering what they produce. Instead of cars, why not mass producing solar panels or wind turbines? Maybe doing that would shift the large and small parts of our economy in the right direction. I say anything but just throwing money at GM and eventually Ford. As far as Chrysler goes, I say let their European masters foot the bill.

The Ford makers of that world have been around for about 100 years now, having replaced the horse and mule, now what is replacing the car, as a New Deal and when will they build that space ship,...that is the 21st Century....A/T. The future is moving forward on no more old deals.

Maybe the U.S. automakers could create a new profit center by programming their assembly line robots to give really rad amusement park thrill rides.

Jason Rice, says:

So this is the official bailout? The 20+ years of 600-1200 extra pounds of extraneous pig-iron to make SUV's heavy "commercial" vehicles rather than fully taxed consumer ones is officially over?

Oh, no.

Never ever EVER thought I'd say this, but I'm sure proud to own a Ford.
