Former Highland Village mayor aiming for higher office
Bill Lawrence, a former three-term Highland Village Mayor, is organizing an exploratory committee for a possible run for Governor or U.S. Senator.
Lawrence announced Thursday that his move to possibly become the Republican Party's nominee is based on the likelihood that incumbent state Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison will resign before the end of her term to run against Gov. Rick Perry in 2010.
"Given the kinds of defeats Republicans have taken in the past two elections, our party has come to a crossroads. My intent by running is to offer voters competent new leadership, integrity, accountability, a positive difference and the best choice," said Lawrence.
Lawrence, 63, is the owner of a dispute mediation firm. His background includes former corporate management positions with Verizon and Cummins Engine Company. He served one term on the Highland Village City Council in 1999 and three consecutive terms as Mayor from 2000 to 2006.
A retired Air Force Colonel and recipient of the Bronze Star Medal for service in Vietnam, Lawrence holds a bachelor's degree from Tuskegee University, a master's degree from St. Mary's University and the University of Dallas, and a law degree from Indiana University.
"I am committed to the founding principles of America - freedom, equality and the common good. I also hold a strong belief in the principle that government is best which governs least and keeps taxes low," Lawrence said.
Other challengers for Hutchison's seat include Railroad Commissioners Michael Williams and Elizabeth Ames Jones, former Texas Secretary of State Roger Williams, state Sen. Florence Shapiro and Houston Mayor Bill White.
