Kwanzaa parade in Dallas kicks off a week of related festivities

17

Friday's (Dec. 26) Kwanzaa parade, originating from Dallas' Lincoln High School parking lot and continuing for about a mile to end at the MLK Recreation Center, marked only the first of a series of events planned for the remainder of the week-long observance of African roots and African-American culture. The parade drew about 100 participants.

Upcoming Kwanzaa events include a range of activities, many of them youth-oriented.

Happy Kwanzaa!

Why does the city of Dallas have a parade celebrating a 'holiday' created by a convicted felon(felony assualt and torture)? Kwanzaa has nothing to do with Africa and was devised purely to divide the races according to its founder Ron Karenda (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ron_Karenga).

I don't get it.

JW Richard, says:

Traveller2020, in my opinion, Christmas has less to do with the the birth of Christ than it does a variety of pagan rituals.

Kwanzaa is not about the continent of Africa (except in the diaspora of slaves shipped to other countries), nor is it about creating a "B/black" Christmas. It is a series of tenets imagined in the vein of of an agricultural festival and created to foster respect among African-Americans/B/black people using general symbols and the language of Swahili.

Besides, why must an secular event celebrating African-American/B/black diversity be construed as "anti-white"? And why is there such emphasis and concern on Ron Karenga being a convicted felon as if his past crime makes him an unfit human being for all time?

I just don't get that

It's construed as anti-white because that is exactly what the 'tenets' of it espouse. It's a separatist holiday plain and simple.

I notice Barack Obama didn't issue any statements acknowledging Kawanza.

Does his family celebrate this phony "holiday"?

Jason Rice, says:

Can we just move St. Pat's to December and justify saucing people up to watch next year's riots on the big screen?

If we wrangle this hatemongering just right, it can be a stand-alone profit center all by itself. Who needs World Cup Soccer? Cool!

It needs a slogan. "Give the Gift of Bloodshed" is too long. Suggestions? Double bonus if you can tick off the Baha'i in the process.

There is a kind of cultural ritual that come with Kawanza in celebration, the meaning is private, while Gospel and the Southern Baptist of African Amercian culture, look at this kind of event as a new exsperment, in the 1950's the history of Kawanza is pretty obscure, while it does have roots and meaning,...A/T, Anthroplogy for the masses.

In the 1950s? It was created in 1966, by a racist named Ron Karenga who spent time in prison for torturing two women.

As for elements of religion.. From the Kwanzaa website:

Finally, it is important to note Kwanzaa is a cultural holiday, not a religious one, thus available to and practiced by Africans of all religious faiths who come together based on the rich, ancient and varied common ground of their Africanness.

Only if they don't slip up and show us the next gunpowder. Anyone takin' odds? ch0 -- you still have a nice recording of the Valkyries, right?

And I've always had a problem with Kwanzaa. I've had friends convert between Jewish / Christian, Catholic / Protestant, Muslim / Christian (I even know of a black Jewish Mason) - but none of them (not already members) could have afforded the melanin treatments Kwanzaa required. Heck even the one African-American I know (dual citizenship) is kinda screwed. Shame.
