The Arlington Reads program encourages the community to read and join group discussion and activities. This year’s theme is “Arlington Reads a Mystery.” Events get under way Friday, Feb.1, at the Arlington City Council Chamber, 101 W. Abram St., with a book sale, book signing and discussion featuring mystery author Laura Lippman.

Lippman grew up in Baltimore and began writing novels while working fulltime and published seven books about “accidental PI” Tess Monaghan before leaving daily journalism in 2001. Her work has won several awards.

The book sale is at 6:30 p.m. and will be followed by the discussion at 7 p.m. and signing at 8 p.m. Alex del Carmen, UT Arlington criminology and criminal justice associate professor and chairman, will discuss theories of deviance from biological, social and economic perspectives at 6:30 p.m.

Monday, Feb. 4, at the Arlington Southeast Branch Library, 900 S.E. Green Oaks Blvd. See this press release for a list of other activities. Also being held in conjunction with this year’s program is a short story contest open to junior high and high school students and themed “Finish this Mystery!” Visit the city Web site for a complete schedule of Arlington Reads events.
