Dallas Baptist men’s basketball holds on for win over Newman

The Patriots held on to a nail biter against Newman University on Monday night in a Heartland Conference show down. DBU, who entered the game on a five game losing streak, rose to the occasion and finished off the Jets in overtime, 94-91. With the victory, DBU improved to 6-14, while Newman fell to 11-8.

The first half was a see saw battle with each time holding leads throughout the half. Neither team could seem to pull away, with the largest lead being five by the Jets early in the half. With the scored tied at 34, the Patriots went on a 4-0 run to close out the first half and take a 38-34 lead into the locker room.

The Patriots came out smoking in the second half running to a quick 10-point lead and forcing the Jets to play catch up the rest of the game. The Jets however, managed to crawl their way back in the game, largely because of the strong play of Kyle Smith, who scored a game high 30 points.

With 14 seconds left on the clock, the Patriots held an 83-80 lead and had to make one more stop on defense to close the game out. Smith, who had already scored 15 points in the second half, leaned into an improbable three-point shot and banked it in to send the game into overtime.

DBU, who is 2-1 in overtime games this year, went on a 7-0 run to close out the game. The run was ignited by Freshman Braxton Adamson, who connected on his fifth three-pointer of the night to tie the score up at 90. The Patriots followed the three up with several defensive stops and two more key baskets to wrap up the victory.

Adamson led the attack for DBU finishing off his night with 24 points and five assists, while Sophomore Eddie Gloviak finished a strong night with 20 points and seven boards. Senior Manny Montano, who made the defensive play of the game by blocking the final shot, contributed with 13 points, 11 rebounds, and six blocks.

The Patriots will look to ride the momentum of the victory on February 7, when the travel to San Antonio, Texas , to take on St. Mary's University.
