McKinney elementary students raising money for cancer-stricken classmate

— Students and staff at Finch Elementary School in the McKinney Independent School District have started a 'Silver Coins for Katheryne' fundraising effort to raise money to help fellow kindergarten student Katheryne Becerra, who was recently diagnosed with lymphoma. Using the catch phrase "every cloud has a silver lining", the students and staff at Finch Elementary are working to collect enough silver coins that would completely surround the school building when they are placed side by side. Once the goal is met, Finch Elementary students will make a donation to the Leukemia Lymphoma Society in Ms. Becerra's name.

In addition, kindergarten classes at Finch are also decorating fabric squares to be sewn into a "chemo quilt". The quilt will be given to Ms. Becerra to help keep her warm and support her during chemotherapy treatments.

Individuals wanting to donate to the 'Silver Coins for Katheryne' fundraiser may do so by bringing the coins to Finch Elementary School, located at 1205 South Tennessee Street in McKinney.

For more information about the 'Silver Coins for Katheryne' contact Mrs. Rebecca Oaxaca, Finch Elementary Counselor at 469-742-5600 or by e-mail at roaxaca@mckinneyisd.net.
