Nolan Ryan named new Texas Rangers president

Email Print Tell us your story Comments (11)

Since at least late November, Tom Hicks and crew have been courting the return of legendary Texas Rangers pitcher, Nolan Ryan. In a press conference at 3 p.m. today, the Rangers will confirm that Ryan is indeed coming back to north Texas to act as the club's president. He will forgo the final year of his service contract with the Houston Astros.

In addition to his new duties with the Rangers, Ryan is part owner and operator of two minor league teams in Round Rock and Corpus Christi.

The Nolan Ryan Express is coming back to north Texas, eh?

You're simply not amurrican if you can't appreciate that.

My God, Nolan Ryan and George W. Bush returning to Dallas. After Jessica Simpson. Can Dick Cheney be far behind? (Yes, but that's another post.)

How dare you lump the Nolan Ryan in with those characters!

Unpatriotic, to say the least, Mr. Gilliland.

Well, if you can't have a winning team, at least have something special going on in mgt.
Besides throwing out first pitches, what will he do? Does anyone think he will help bring a pennant to North Texas?

I'd rather have him more involved with players, i.e. pitching coach, but I'm sure he won't hurt our chances to win a pennant.

I was a ridiculously huge fan of him as a kid (insisted on going to the game when he threw his 5,000th K and what not). If nothing else, I'd say the morale boost just by having Nolan in the organization helps out.

Now if Dallas only had a baseball team that played in a downtown stadium. That would make Spring/Summer somthing special in the big D.

its a publicity stunt is all I'm saying. Waving one hand saying, " look over here, look what we are doing in the front office"

Sign a real pitcher, then I'll be impressed.

And BTW, I love Ryan too, its just such a blatant stunt, they need to be called on it.

Is it mostly for the publicity? Probably.

Do I care? Not really.

Rangers are pretty much destined to do whatever they're going to do offensively, I've decided.

Lastangelman: I like the way you think, but I would just be happy if he could help the perpetually wobegone Rangers. Guys: Don't be so quick to write him off just yet. The wild card in all of this is John Daniels, who at least has the club moving sort of in the right direction by insisting on building (mostly) from within, a philosophy which helped build our noble Dallas Cowboys into America's Team. It says here that they hired a living, genuine, breathing Baseball Man rather than just another good businessman, and any positive input would be welcome and long overdue. Finally, let me just say that the fans have proven time and again that yes, they will support the Rangers quite well thank you if you concentrate more of your attention on the product on the field rather than just the marketing concept du jour.
