Texas workers wanting to know more about how to design and build autonomous vehicles, i.e. vehicles that drive themselves, may attend free workshops conducted by faculty in the Autonomous Vehicles Laboratory in The University of Texas at Arlington’s College of Engineering.
Two one-week sessions will be conducted in July and will be provided at no cost to the participants. The Texas Workforce Commission awarded UT Arlington a $364,000 grant to develop educational programs that will provide a growing supply of technically proficient workers for Texas’ defense and aerospace industries.
These industries are an important part of the economic strength of the north Texas economy. Because of the U. S. military’s interest in the increased use of both ground and aerial autonomous vehicle systems (AVS), the development and manufacture of these vehicles is expected to drive worldwide AVS spending up from $3.4 billion annually to $7.3 billion within 10 years in the United States alone.
The workshops will be conducted from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. during the weeks of July 14-18 and July 28-Aug. 1. Four days will be spent on the UT Arlington campus and one day at a testing and training facility. Topics explored in the workshops include design concepts, mission and operating scenarios, system integration and testing, estimation and system identification, dynamic system modeling and simulation.
Space in the free workshops is limited. Individuals interested should provide the following information: their current or former employer (if currently unemployed), how long they are (were) employed, what department/ division they work for, the last school they attended and the highest level earned, and why they want to attend the workshop Send this information to Dr. Atilla Dogan of the mechanical and aerospace engineering department at dogan@uta.edu by Feb, 15. Those accepted for the workshops will be notified by March 21.
