Time for DFW residents to get up and protest against gas drilling

Email Print Tell us your story Comments (2)

We have now witnessed several neighborhoods and at least one city (Bedford, Texas) who have challenged out of control gas drilling and won.

The energy extractors who are preying on our cities and towns across the Barnett Shale and spreading across the whole country are like single minded drones in their pursuit of income for their shareholders.

The have made a mockery of our zoning laws, threatened our clean water supplies, filled our air with carcinogens, ruined our rural lands and wilderness areas, intimidated our elderly and naive citizens, bought off our elected officials and church leaders, erected equipment in our neighborhoods with the potential to incinerate our children, elevated our sense of anxiety and hopelessness, etc. etc. ad nauseam.

Yes, they are powerful, but they can be stopped, one way or another. Once you begin to realize that fact you, too, become powerful.

My old pal, Howard Beale, has some darn good advice I'd like to share with you those of you who need a little prodding to wake up from feelings of hopelessness:

Now I want you to get up right now, sit up, go to your windows, open them and stick your head out and yell - ‘I’m as mad as hell and I’m not going to take this anymore!’ Things have got to change. But first, you’ve gotta get mad!… You’ve got to say, ‘I’m as mad as hell, and I’m not going to take this anymore!’ Then we’ll figure out what to do about the depression and the inflation and the oil crisis. But first get up out of your chairs, open the window, stick your head out, and yell, and say it: ‘I’M AS MAD AS HELL, AND I’M NOT GOING TO TAKE THIS ANYMORE!

"...incinerate our children"? Oh puhlease. If anything has, "elevated our sense of anxiety and hopelessness" it is baseless fear-mongering like this post.

If you have a link to a peer-reviewed scientific study showing that a properly operated gas well emits proven carcinogens at a level harmful to humans, please post it.

If you have evidence that public officials haven taken bribes, please contact the proper authorities so they can be prosecuted.

And speaking of gas well fires, how many Fort Worth residents died in gas well fires in the last year? I'd bet more residents died in swimming pools than in gas well fires.

I may not agree with all you say here but some points are well taken. Land owners should get at least a 50% royalty on production. See more at http://enjoygas.blogspot.com/.

Stand together or fall alone.

GWAR / Kingdom of Sorrow / Toxic Holocaust Only lead singer Oderus Urungus (aka Dave Brockie) has stuck around since GWAR's start 23 years ago, but the huge costumes, raunchy and obscene lyrics, and fluids spraying into the audience are sure to be on full display as the metal band makes its return to Dallas.
