Great show!

Happy Valentines Day!

You'll notice a few things are different in this week's e-missive. First, Catherine is on a two-week newsletter vacation, so I (Mike) am pinch-hitting.

And I'm taking the opportunity to try a different service for creating the newsletter that a.) looks more like the PegNews you know and love and b.) is a little more robust in its list management.

Bear with us -- We may blow the whole thing up and try something different next week.

In the meantime, if you like what we're doing here, please forward this to all of your friends, enemies and Valentines.

Ways we're currently bribing you to spend more time with us

We've just announced a contest to win one of two pair of tickets to Joe Ely / Ryan Bingham and the Dead Horses at the Bass Hall, even before they go on sale tomorrow ... Also, classical guitar aficionados can win tickets to The Romeros at the Eisemann Center ... And we're also starting an ongoing giveaway that's so cool, you can't enter it. We call it "The UnContest."

Week in review

Metro: Big Daddy John Carona wants to keep track of your prepaid cell phone, which you can't use near a school anyways. And he's probably not enthralled about high school girls kissing. Sadly, the ever-titillating McKinney Cheerleading saga is executing its final split. At least we're sure to be entertained as we're now in the unusual position of mattering to the Presidential primary contenders, who someday hope to generate memorabilia for Chad to shoot video of. Frankly, I'm voting for whatever candidate can fix the screwy HOV lanes.

Overheard on the comment boards

Biz: Exxon Mobil posted the biggest profits in the history of ever -- And there's nothing wrong with that, right? In other mega-co news, Clear Channel ditched Redbeard from their experimental Lone Star format.

Recognizing game: All hail the return of our Lord and Savior Nolan Ryan. The Mavs went 2-2 for the week, with Dirk putting up his first-ever triple-double. Stars went 3-0 as Turco was the NHL's second star, but then he had to go and get hurt. And then there's the NHL trade efforts.

Eats: Teresa was back from vacation with a vengeance as she dished on a new crepe place; a new Tim Love place; Irish soda bread; romantic veggies; and the return of Doughmonkey.

Artsy: Should Salome make you laugh? Check out Shawn's interview with Academy Award winner/ Tony nominee Eric Simonson. And Mark-Brian Sonna's The Lovers looks like a hit. Do you know what's up on the punk scene? Well, do ya, punk? And, as always, don't miss all the weekend's art openings as well as the theater openings and closings.

Flix: The film guy visited the Texas Black Film Festival and was reminded of the power of the documentary form He also interviewed Eran Kolirin, writer of the soon-to-be-in-Dallas The Band's Visit.
