Email Print Tell us your story Comments (9)

A man smoking outside of his apartment near the Katy Trail Sunday night was shot and robbed by two men. The man was apparently shot when he tried to fight off the robbers. He is expected to survive after suffering a neck wound and collapsed lung.

Actually, this story's headline is incorrect. This incident happend IN Highland Park, on Abbott.

These apartments are in HP, not Dallas. Thats right, this was a crime, a real one, in HP.

I hate to sound cynical, but there have been several murders in Dallas lately, the mother in Oak Cliff, and the police did not get the helicopter out to search for her killers. They swarmed over south Dallas(Cedars) for almost 30 min. in the am. Good to know that HP crime is taken so seriously.

What interests me is the persistent mention of the Katy Trail, even though the details of the case given here have no connection to the trail. I would like to see evidence for the implied correlation between increased crime and the presence of the Katy Trail.

as a resident living on the katy trail a couple of blocks from the incident (i hear helicopters patrolling as i type this), I have to say that I can see the Katy Trail connection. It is completely unlit- and thus a great spot for crime at night. The apartment building in question backs up to the trail, and the suspects had walked off the trail for the robbery.
There are lots of stories I hear (perhaps some false) of unsavory-types-of-things happening on the trail at night. Perhaps it's time we go ahead and light it?

I am a Friend of the Katy Trail donor who lives just off the trail and I am extremely dismayed at the lack of security and police presence on the trail. I called 911 to report suspicious activity on the trail last week and I was relieved to see bicycle police within minutes of my report. But what they said to me when I approached them to point out the incident FLOORED ME. I was told they were not actually allowed to be on the trail. I followed up on this with the Director of the trail and was told that the bicycle police beat is actually only the CBD...not the trail. When I asked whose beat it actually was, I got a very inadequate explanation. I was told because the trail actually covers several beats, the squad car officers are encouraged to park and walk along the trail a few hundred yards in each direction when they are in the area. I am on the trail at least an hour every day and have never seen a fully uniformed police officer walking down the trail. I think there needs to be an outcry for more patrols on horseback and cycle. This trail needs to be treated as the major north/south artery it actually is. I have friends who now avoid the trail in preference of street sidewalks, knowing there is a better chance to see a policeman pass on the street than on the trail if something bad should happen. I was informed that the DPD would be holding classes to train volunteers to help patrol the trail, but when I showed up at the posted time and place, this class did not exsist. My concerned calls to the neighborhood liason at DPD have gone unanswered. I hope this unfortunate event will bring some much needed attention to a lack of security and inattention by the Dallas Police Department on the Katy Trail.

There's a direct correlation between no line breaks and me skipping your input.

Thanks,

More hand-wringing outrage about security not being sufficient and more cops and tons of lights needed on the 'this-can't-happen-here' Katy Trail.

Yes, these stories are terrible. Yes they are shocking and dreadful and unacceptable. But I make note of the storm-the-castle anger regarding this newest of 6 violent incidents on the 5 plus mile long trail when there are similar incidents other places.

Bottom line deal here is that this is not supposed to happen in the 'good' parts of town. Meaning if this happens in say Oak Cliff or southern Dallas, "what the hell did (they) expect"?

I would say that neither me or Rawlins wants to donate any of our officers on the south side for the Katy Trail.

I lived near the Katy Trail for two years in Knox-Henderson, and never felt unsafe. I had one car break in (things happen), and never felt in danger in taking a late night walk.

This shooting is a tragic event. But there doesn't need to be an outcry of patrols unless it's coming from the HP side, which it won't since the trail is mostly in Dallas.

There's always a bunch of DPD nearby in Knox-H. Whenever I went to Chips I would see a few squad cars and some of Dallas' great officers grabbing a bite. Response in that neighborhood has always been great.

We want more cops also on the south side, too. Enough with the knee jerk reaction stuff from the 'near the Katy Trail, This can't be' crowd.
