SMU receives “A” for safety from Reader’s Digest

Reader's Digest, that renowned condenser of all the popular literature that's fit to print (and otherwise), has awarded Southern Methodist University an "A" for campus safety preparedness.

"Biff, did you hear? We got an 'A' from Reader's Digest!"

"Biff, did you hear? We got an 'A' from Reader's Digest!"

Ranking the institution as the 16th safest college in the U.S. (and the safest private university in Texas), the respected publishing juggernaut (whose expertise in the field of campus security is conceded by no one) factored such variables as dorm room sprinkler systems, 24-hour security and emergency planning into their determination, published somewhat clunkily in .pdf format here.

Unsurprisingly given its cloistered University Park location, SMU ranked in the "lower" category for reported crime rates.

Students eager to celebrate the announcement could be seen romping about the grounds sporting shirts and blouses bearing appliquéd letter "A"s, having apparently failed to read the Reader's Digest condensed version of The Scarlet Letter - or even the CliffsNotes.

The Magnetic Fields Quartet led by songwriter Stephen Merritt is resolutely "indie" so how come their music has been used in a Volvo commercial and appeared in the film Lemony Snicket? More info
