Ventana Grille in Arlington to get big marketing push from the city

6

— Arlington Parks and Recreation Board is stepping in with a marketing plan to help keep alive Ventana Grille, the restaurant at the Tierra Verde Golf Club in Arlington. It opened in October '06, lost $140K in its first year, and will lose $80K this year. The city blames a lack of development in the area, poor visibility, and a downtown in the economy. They do acknowledge that the place has "staffing problems." But they're attached to having the restaurant out there at the golf club and credit it with attracting more tournaments.

Plans to improve the restaurant include (and these are for real): hiring a golf marketing consultant to develop an advertising campaign; hiring a facility manager; expanding the patio; improving customer service; and inserting coupons with water bills. Isn't it so great they don't even mention the food?

I couldn't help but notice that they plan on "improving customer service". This from the government? The term government operated would seem to preclude customer service.

We have recently moved to Arlington and are always looking for new places to eat. We discovered the Ventana Grille thru the water bill advertisement and tried it. It was GREAT!! Sunday breakfst/brunch was so good. We will go again and bring more friends. Nice place, clean, excellent food, great presentation and good prices. This place is set back off the hwy and the area has not developed yet, but when it does, we will all be waiting in line to get in. Enjoy it now before that happens. I will be a regular customer and I don't even play golf!

Tapas in Tarrant County - finally! Thank you, Easter Bunny - thank you, Allah - thank you, Beelzebub.

The Ventana Grill is one of the tastiest, best kept-secrets in Arlington. The prices and portion sizes on both the hot and cold tapas menus will make you scratch your head and blink like a jackass, wondering if Cafe Madrid has been playing a huge joke on you this entire time. The bill for two, including wine and six tasty plates of heaven, came out to a whopping $59.

It's all tucked away in a nice corner of SW Arlington, too, but it was weird how the brand spanking-new MLK Park & Rec Center (down the road from the golf center and restaurant) was completely deserted on a Friday night. Maybe word hasn't gotten around about the place yet (somebody say 'marketing plan'?) - or it was just too bloody hot to be outside that evening.

The first thing we noticed is that the waitress, although nice, was very poorly trained, very inexperienced and lacked initiative to resolve issues. (A supervision problem) My wife had coffee and she was supplied with a soup spoon for stirring. The pork dinner that I ordered tasted freezer burnt or was old pork. When brought to the attention of the waitress she said she could not do anything about it without the managers approval and he was unavailable. The lamb chops were good but it was not from the flavor of the lamb, it was because of whatever they covered them with. Both our glasses were empty before she asked if we needed a refill, DUH. And then she seemed to not notice our ice had melted. The Grille has potential but they need a manager that can train staff and pay attention to detail. The Chef is cutting corners, possibly to help keep the place afloat. Unless I here of a drastic change I'll never return.

that waitress sounds like my kind of waitress. i cannot stand when servers mindlessly refill the water glass every time you take a sip. i prefer to have the glass emptied and then be asked, do i want more water? any other approach seems wasteful to me.

i also do not like ice. so she would get my highest rating

What do you think?
