The 15th season of Lyric Stage, Dallas County's only locally produced professional musical theater company, is continuing with They're Playing Our Song. The show runs from February 15 - March 1 and tickets are available online or by calling 972-252-2787.
They're Playing Our Song is a musical comedy with a book by Neil Simon, lyrics by Carole Bayer Sager, and music by Marvin Hamlisch. In a story based on the real-life relationship of Hamlisch and Sager, a wisecracking composer finds a new, offbeat lyricist, but initially the match is not one made in heaven. The two undergo a series of trials and overcome a number of hurdles before finding true love by the final curtain.
The original Broadway production, starring Robert Klein and Lucie Arnaz, opened at the Imperial Theatre February 11, 1979. It was nominated for 4 Tony Awards and ran for 1,082 performances. Lyric Stage Founding Producer Steven Jones saw the original Broadway production on his first trip to New York in August of 1979. "Lucie Arnaz and Robert Klein stopped the show cold with the title song. I have never seen an ovation like that anywhere" says Jones. For this production, Stacia Goad Malone and Paul Taylor will play the unlikely lovers. The rest of the cast includes Chris Galvan, Kristi Rowan, Vernicia Vernon, C. Nicholas Morris, Michael Newberry and Rick Starkweather.
Len Pfluger returns to Lyric Stage as director after his triumph as Carousel choreographer. Scott A. Eckert is music director, Wade Giampa designs sets, with lighting by Susan A. White and costumes by Drenda Lewis.
