UNT softball splits doubleheader with Louisiana Tech

The North Texas softball team split a doubleheader with Louisiana Tech on Wednesday afternoon at the LT Softball Complex. The Mean Green won the first game, 1-0, and dropped the nightcap, 8-6.
The Mean Green extends its record 3-3 this year and 1-1 on the road. NT leads the series with the Techsters, 4-2. Louisiana Tech now holds a record of 3-3 as well.
Freshman Jennifer Smith picked up her first collegiate win, pitching a one-hit shutout in the 1-0 victory. She held a no-hitter until the bottom of the seventh inning when the lead-off batter for Louisiana Tech doubled to right center field.
Freshman Mallory Cantler knocked in the game’s only run with an RBI single to left field in the top of the sixth. She scored senior Lauren Bergstrom who doubled to start off the inning. Senior Katya Muller moved her to third base with a sacrifice bunt. Cantler went 2-for-3 in the opening game. The Mean Green outhit the Techsters, 6-1.
Louisiana Tech found its bats in the second game. The Techsters jumped out to an early 4-0 lead on five hits and a three-run homer in the first inning.
The Mean Green cut into the lead with three runs in the second and then tied the game in the sixth at 6-6. Muller drove in two runs in the sixth with a bases-loaded single. Cantler tied the game with an RBI single. Marisa Martinez scored on the play after getting on base with a single.
Martinez and Cantler both posted two hits in the second game. Cantler led the Mean Green with four hits in the combined two games.
Louisiana Tech scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to win the game. North Texas went down three-and-out the last two innings. The Techsters outhit the Mean Green in the second game, 12-10.
North Texas returns to action on Saturday when it faces Sam Houston in doubleheader action on the road.
