Week-in-view: World domination edition

Have you ever seen Dallas Fort Worth from a DC-9 at night?

i

Welcome to the next phase in our plan for virtual world domination.

The biggest news this week is us, and our recent purchase of naming rights to the bar formerly known as Lee Harvey's, now and forever known as the PegasusNews.com Conviviality Centr™. We are exceedingly confident that it will usher in a new era of unparalleled conviviality for the entire Dallas and Fort Worth Consolidated Metropolitan Statistical Area.

After that bit of exciting news, I realize that the rest of this week's missive may seem tame. Try to hang with us anyway. And if you like what you read, please forward this to all of your friends.

Ways we're currently bribing you to spend more time with us

You still have time to win tickets to The Romeros at the Eisemann Center and Joe Ely / Ryan Bingham and the Dead Horses at Bass Hall ... "The UnContest" is rolling right along. This week, your reading habits alone could have won you tickets to Joe Ely, Quaternaglia, or a free Contours Express body wrap.

Week in review

Metro: Weird crime week: There's a new kind of vigilante justice: Beat the guy with whatever he robbed you with. And in a turnabout from the stories you usually here, women are slipping guys mickeys to rob them .. The Stephenville UFO thlot pickens. Speaking of tin hats, there were some local folks marching at the Scientology mansion this week ... And the Dallas City Council spent $500k on a piece of land worth next to nothing ... A local pooch won big at Westminster ... I feel bad for being so mercenary, but I know what you click on: Bisexual Media Buyer Big Brother 9. Now aren't you ashamed?!

Overheard on the comment boards

  • rawlins on Laura Bush and mother eat at Sevy’s Grill in Dallas, exclamation point: God how I dread when George and Laura move to Dallas and this duller-than-the-dead crew's every dinner-luncheon whereabouts is reported breathlessly, daily. "The President had the bean and cheese nachos while the former First Lady sampled the queso." Gag me!...
  • Worzel_Gummidge on Drew Hendricks of Charlie Palmer Dallas passes test to become master sommelier: Hard to believe it, but I managed to get an advance copy of the 2008 written exam! Here are the questions: 1) We frequently hear that winemakers are vinifying for soft tannins. Which statement more accurately describes Cabernet Sauvignon consumption patterns in Texas: a) Buy it, drive home, drink it; b) Buy it, drink it, drive home ... 2) What percentage new French oak is used in Thunderbird? ... 3) First date with a hottie who says she used to be a sommelier at Hooters. What will relax her quickest? a) Dom Perignon; b) 1977 Taylor Fladgate Port; c) Jose Cuervo Gold ... 4) If Rachel Ray were a wine she'd be Two Buck Chuck at a case discount. Discuss ...
  • amyarnold on Coca-Cola Starplex Smirnoff Music Centre becomes Superpages.com Center: Clearly, none of you are in marketing ...

Biz: Is the apocalypse near? Wal-Mart adds docs in boxes and Starbucks closes for a bit ... But at least the Plano CompUSA has been saved from the call of the wrecking ball.

Book learnin': Alex was the proverbial fly on the wall as area school superintendents gave their take on the state of education here ... LISD issues a report that leaves unanswered questions. Maybe they could use some of the stuff the HP kids are smoking ... Community member Linda Jones caught Spike Lee's talk at UTA.

Recognizing game: The Mavs traded for Jason Kidd. Then they didn't. Meantime they went 3-2 on the week ... Stars were 3-0 while Cupcheck tried to keep them safe.

Eats: Drew Hendricks of Charlie Palmer Dallas joined a very elite club of master sommeliers ... CliffDweller's Rob Shearer reviews a new pizza joint and clears up the difference (if any) between hoagies and grinders. The ever-stylish Law Reviewers found Medina Oven and Grill to be neither funky nor cold ... And Minnie showed us how to get great natural foods from Barking Cat Farm.

Artsy: The big news is The Blue Shoe Project's well-deserved Grammy win, pre-celebrated by a concert this week. It's concert-ticket fever time as Bob Dylan announces a three-night stand next weekend and Radiohead's tickets presell-out. Nominations for the ninth annual Column Awards are out. Mark-Brian Sonna admires the "risk" behind Slaughterhouse 5. In the Theater spotlight, Shawn talks to Jason Folks, director of 1984. Laura S. talked to Sergio Garcia about his opening at Kettle Art.

Flix: The Film Guy caught up with the minds behind MST3K. On Definitely, Maybe, he says "Definitely, maybe." And don't forget to Step Up 2 the Streets
