On February 14th, Valentine's Day, Medical City Lancaster discharged its final patient sometime between 12 and 1 p.m.

The 90-bed hospital stopped accepting emergency room patients on Feb. 12.

Hospital spokesman Joe Poulos said there were three main reasons for the closing of the hospital.

"First, there was an unexpected opening of a nearby medical center that reduced the number of patients MCL treated," Poulos said. "There was also a higher than anticipated level of uncompensated care. The big reason was the inability to ensure the same payment rates as other hospitals from HMOs (health maintenance organization) and insurance companies."

MCL chief executive officer Michael Curran released a statement Feb. 12 that addressed the concerns over the care of the patients currently at the hospital.

"Our highest priority during this process is patient safety," Curran said. "Therefore we are not accepting any new patients in order to focus entirely on the care and safe transport of current patients to other facilities."

Poulos said that the hospital was planning on filing for bankruptcy.
