The No. 44 SMU men's tennis team took a convincing 4-2 win over Arkansas-Little Rock Friday evening at the Bent Tree Country Club. SMU improves to 6-2 on the season with the win.
The match was rescheduled to 5:30pm and moved indoors after rainy, windy conditions were forecast for the Dallas area. Because of the late start, the doubles matches were scrapped.
In singles, the Mustangs had a decent outing, winning four of the six matches. Robin Fahgen fell at No. 1, marking his first singles loss of the season. Fahgen dropped to Rain Roiges, 5-7, 4-6. David Kuczer picked up the first point for SMU playing in the second slot, beating German Perez in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3. Alex Skrypko battled through a tight match at No. 3, but was unable to overcome Edson Abrao, dropping the match 5-7, 6-7. Oivind Alver notched an impressive come-from-behind win at No. 4, defeating Marko Ballok, 4-6, 7-5, 6-2.
Adolfo Solares continued his domination this season, beating Juan Carlos Nunez in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 5. Chris Hooshyar wrapped up the match for the Mustangs at No. 6, defeating Dorian Sovic in straight sets, 6-2, 7-5.
"It was a good win for us," said head coach Carl Neufeld. "Oivind Alver's win [at No. 4] was pivotal. It was a great come-from-behind win that really helped us out."
The Mustangs are off Saturday, but resume play Sunday as they host a double header at the Bent Tree Country Club in Dallas (maps, directions). SMU will welcome Lamar at noon Sunday, followed by Centenary College at 3pm. For the complete schedule and results, log on to SMUMustangs.com.
