No. 44 NC State handed the No. 60 SMU women's tennis team its first loss of the season Saturday, 6-1. The Mustangs move to 6-1 on the season while the Pack improves to 4-1.
SMU's lone point of the day came at No. 3 singles. Pavi Francis had an impressive come-from-behind win, beating Lenka Hojckova 2-6, 7-6 (1), 6-4.
The Mustangs struggled in doubles, losing two of the three matches. Natalia Bubien and Francis won their match at No. 1 over Brock/Petrovic, 8-1, while at No. 2, Kristen Reid paired with Jessica Yanoff , but lost to Hojckova/Roach, 8-2. The tandem of Kseniia Tokarieva and Nicole Briceno fought through a tight match, but ultimately fell to Bleakley/Grotz, 9-8 (6).
Bubien's undefeated streak was broken against #79 Daria Petrovic. She battled at No. 1, winning the first set, 6-4, but dropped the next two, 2-6, 1-6. At No. 2, Tokarieva lost to #97 Berkeley Brock in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1. Francis pulled out SMU's only point at No. 3, beating Hojckova in impressive fashion after dropping her first set, 2-6, 7-6 (1), 6-4. Yanoff fell at No. 4, losing to Julia Roach in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1. Kristen Reid had a close match at No. 5, but couldn't pull it out, dropping to Neils Barringer, 6-2, 6-4, while Briceno fell to Catherine Grotz, 6-0, 6-2.
