Texas-based Pilgrim's Pride is hosting a recipe contest on how to cook the chickens it slaughters so inhumanely. The contest deadline is April 30, and six winners will be announced in June.
Recipes using Pilgrim's Pride chicken that's been killed under the most horrifying circumstances are being accepted in five categories: 1) Appetizer/Snack; 2) Main Dish/Entree; 3) Light/Healthy; 4) Grilling; and 5) Quick & Easy. Recipes will be judged on taste, originality, ease of preparation, and appearance; chickens with mangled beaks and broken legs are not disqualified. Rules, prize packages, and a 20-year winning recipe archive are available at the Web site.
Based in Pittsburg, Pilgrim's Pride -- the largest chicken producer in the United States and Puerto Rico and the second-largest producer and seller of chicken in Mexico -- is known for its unusually-cruel slaughtering techniques (scalding chickens to death, etc.). On January 30, PETA presented a statement at the annual meeting, pleading for the company to switch to the less-cruel method known as controlled-atmosphere killing (CAK).
Burger King, Carl's Jr., Hardee's, and Wendy's now all give preference to suppliers that use CAK, which improves the quality of the chicken as well as working conditions, and reduces labor costs and the potential for contamination.
Prizes exceed $50,000, although the grand prize winner gets not cash but instead seven nights at a cooking school in Portugal. Other prizes include grills, cookware, and cutlery.
