Thanks for posting this. Here is the unfortunate update. A woman picked up the cat, took it the Fort Worth Animal Shelter on the day the cat went missing. She live nearly a block away from me and claims "black cats were killing her chickens in her backyard" (since when can you have chickens in your backyard in FW) My cat never left my driveway or neighbors yard. The woman signed paperwork it was her cat and she had owned it for three years. She had the cat put down the same day. The Fort Worth Animal Control says she will face no penalty for signing false information on a city document. This is terrible. The world lost a kind gentle soul that day. Someone can go to jail for animal abuse, but if someone steals an animal and has it put down at the City Shelter they face no penalty. There is no justice for animals. I have asked the Fort Worth City Council to look at adding a fine if someone lies on a report, right now this could happen to any pet owner and the offender can get away scott free. Thanks, Derik Lattig

OMG!! That is horrible! I am so sorry!
That is a really low thing to do. Have you considered a civil action? Not sure, would that be small claims?

That's terrible. Isn't that at least theft? I mean, I can't go down to the pawn shop with your TV and sell it, so how can someone just put down a cat?

Dreadful story and my deepest condolences. This is a story that saddens me but if it is any confort whatsoever, can help many a reader.
Meaning: I currently have my dog microchipped but I have not done so for my two cats, and this reminds me that yes, I certainly should. Because they scan all cats when the are taken to shelters, to identify whether this is someone's cat, etc.
Many times the animal is NOT 'owned' by the person taking it in, and claiming it is theirs, as was the case here. That is how my hound was reunited with me the first time, when someone stole her and then she was snared after being dumped and taken to the Forney Street Dallas Animal Shelter.
PS: I am not being flip when I say that I have a huge outdoor cat community on my property in addition to the two cats I actually adopted, and 3 outside are young black preteens. If you would like a new kitty to remind you of your sweet black kitty that was killed, please let me know. I am all about connecting homeless animals with people who care.
Meanwhile, please accept my sincere condolence to you and your cat. Bad neighbors are a terrible thing, and animal cruelty unforgivable.
Sincerely Rawlins

Thanks for your comments. I addressed the FW council asking them to look at putting a fine in place for falsefying a city document. This has been really hard, I really miss my buddy.

Newsguy, as I offered, and I understand it may be two soon, but outside at my friend John and Susan's door are not one but two sweet black young cats. The offer to even deliver them is open-ended if I can help. They are healthy homeless pre-teen kitties, all black and sweet and quite tame. One or both? Again my condolences. Sincerely, Rawlins
