In the wake of the tragic Valentine's Day events on the campus of Northern Illinois University, the press office at Southern Methodist University has issued a public reminder detailing the measures in place to protect students on campus.

Among other measures, the press release mentions the 24-7 campus police department; the fact that campus police work in concert with surrounding local police agencies and the Dallas County Sheriff's Office; training and security procedures in place that can be implemented in the event of an active shooter scenario; the existence of a fully-equipped and staffed Emergency Operations Center; and a multi-pronged system to contact students in the event of various categories of emergency. This would include email and voicemail and a phone hot line.

Also in place is a closed-circuit TV surveillance system.

SMU is working to ensure that all students know how to proceed in the event of the four categories of emergency detailed on the accompanying poster, which presumably will be posted in campus buildings for quick and easy reference. Also, students are encouraged to update their emergency contact information whenever their cell number or email address changes.

Saturday Tastings in the Wine and Beer Department Little Joey just LOVES the Saturday wine tastings at Central Market - he particularly likes the blind tastings, when he can sneak a snort while Mommie's not looking. (Great nose!) More info
