Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert and City Council moving quickly to overpay for convention-center hotel site
DALLAS Tuesday morning at 11:30 a.m., Dallas' Economic Development Committee has convened a meeting wherein the agenda will include recommending a vote by the City Council to go ahead and buy a parcel of land for a convention center hotel.
Specifically, the Economic Development Committee -- which includes Tennell Atkins, Dwaine Caraway, Jerry Allen, Sheffie Kadane, Mitch Rasansky, Linda Koop, and Steve Salazar -- will vote on whether to to recommend spending $41.3 million on a parcel of land valued at $7,345,640.
If the Economic Development Committee approves this recommendation, it will go to a vote by the City Council on February 27. Then, the city would have until September 30 to decide whether to purchase the land it has committed to.

If there is demand for a convention center hotel why hasn't the private sector reacted to supply that demand?

Tom Leppert is quickly moving up the list as "worst mayor," which presently has Steve Bartlett ranked as #1.

Sure glad we elected the guy who touted his mad CEO skillz. I wonder how a purchase like this would have gone over at one of his past jobs?

Government subsidies and market distortions make no sense. They lead to overcapacity and waste of natural and financial resources. Hotels with empty rooms are a waste of bricks, mortar, wood, steel, concrete, furniture, and kitchen equipment, to say nothing of what that capital could have done if it had been directed toward uses with true demand.
