Erykah Badu and Ghostbar Dallas to host charity fundraiser
Benefit show to raise money and awareness for nonprofit group B.L.I.N.D. and the refurbishment of the Historic Central Forest Theater.
More R&B
Q-Tip, Erykah Badu, and 9th Wonder will 'mix' together on Wednesday, February 27th at Ghostbar - delivering a one-of-a-kind DJ experience all in the name of South Dallas! Doors open at 8 p.m. with guest opener A One and will end at 2 a.m. sharp.
"It's quite simple," says Paul Levatino, co-promoter and marketing representative of Erykah Badu. "Erykah wanted to do something special for South Dallas by raising money to continue community outreach programs that have been temporarily put on hold due to maintenance issues at The Historic Central Forest Theater. We picked Ghostbar due to their coordinated sincere efforts to support B.L.I.N.D. by making this event a reality."
All door proceeds and sponsorship will benefit Erykah Badu's non-profit organization B.L.I.N.D. 501C3 (Beautiful Love Incorporated Non-profit Development). B.L.I.N.D. is making positive social change through economic, artistic, and cultural development of South Dallas. The grassroots organization provides community enrichment programs for inner-city youth through music, dance, theatre, visual arts, and the refurbishment of The Historic Central Forest Theater.
Erykah Badu and Q-Tip are no strangers to working together musically. In the early 1990's, the pair were band mates in The Soulquarians, a neosoul-informed hip hop musical collective with a rotating list of members, including Common, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Q-Tip, Erykah Badu, Bilal, and the late J Dilla. Erykah and Q-Tip worked together again when appearing on fellow Dallasite Roy Hargrove's single, "Poetry," and again on Common's "Come Close" (The J Dilla remix).
New Amerykah, set to release on February 26th, is Erykah Badu's first album release since 2003's Worldwide Underground and reflects not only the state of Erykah Badu but the state of the country. New Amerykah Part I: The 4th World War is an imaginative two-part studio project which Badu describes as "the war within...the war we fight with ourselves." Though Badu's multifarious musical roots of soul, jazz, and hip-hop do collide to make sweet chaos, it is Badu's organic hip-hop sensibilities that pervade her new opus.
This event is produced by Control FreaQ Records, Paul Levatino Presents, and SpiltMilk. Ghostbar is located at 2440 Victory Park Lane, on the 33rd Floor of the W Hotel. For table reservations contact 214-720-9909. The party is restricted to 21 and up, with a valid id. A limited number of tickets are available at the door the night of the show and on this Web site for $25.00. Donations over $100.00 will receive a tax donation form for 2008 and a copy of Erykah's New Amerykah.

Scott, says:
In the "fine print" of many charity events, you see that "a portion of the proceeds" will go to the designated cause. Note that the press release above says that "all door proceeds and sponsorship" will go to B.L.I.N.D.
It's nice to know that in this age of high-profile celebrity dissolution and self-absorption there are still some artists with an active, dirt-under-the-fingernails social conscience.
