TCU women’s basketball’s Sverrisdottir claims second straight player of the week award
TCU freshman Helena Sverrisdottir was named Mountain West Conference women's basketball player of the week for the second straight Monday after helping lead the Lady Frogs to two more victories last week.
Sverrisdottir posted per game averages last week of 16.5 points, 10.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists during TCU's wins over No. 22/22 Wyoming (Feb. 13) and New Mexico (Feb. 17).
The Hafnarfjordur, Iceland, native set a career high with 12 rebounds during the Lady Frogs' 73-59 home victory over Wyoming on Wednesday. She pulled down six offensive boards against the Cowgirls while adding nine points and a team-high four assists.
Sverrisdottir put her scoring ability on display during TCU's 59-51 overtime victory over New Mexico Sunday, as she poured in a career-high 24 points on 10-of-15 shooting. She scored 19 points after halftime, in addition to finishing with nine boards while playing a career-high 38 minutes. Sverrisdottir helped the Frogs regroup from a difficult first half that saw the squad fall into an early 13-point deficit.
The freshman's recent hot streak has coincided with a six-game TCU winning streak that has elevated the team back into contention for its eighth consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. After a 5-7 record to start its season, an 11-2 record over the last six weeks has helped the squad reach second place in the MWC standings with a 9-2 mark. Sverrisdottir leads the team in scoring (13.3 ppg), rebounding (7.6 rpg) and turnover-to-assist ratio (2.6) during the current six-game winning streak.
For the season, Sverrisdottir owns per game averages of 9.3 points, 6.0 rebounds and 2.8 assists. She currently sits fourth, second and second in the respective MWC rankings among freshmen for scoring, rebounding and assists. She also is the lone freshman to appear in each of the conference's statistical categories.
The 6-1 guard shared the league's weekly award with Utah's Leilani Mitchell last week.
TCU looks to continue its winning ways Wednesday, Feb. 20, when it travels to Fort Collins, Colo., to take on Colorado State. Tip-off at CSU's Moby Arena is set for 8 p.m. CST.
