The No. 33 TCU women's tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision to No. 8 Baylor on Wednesday night at the Baylor Tennis Center. The Horned Frogs fall to 2-2 overall with the loss, while the Bears improve to 6-1 on the season.
"The match was a lot closer than the final score indicates," said TCU head coach Jefferson Hammond. "I was incredibly happy with the way we competed from start to finish on all the singles courts. The match really could've gone either way.
"The team knows they're capable of playing with anyone in the country, and today they lost in a hard fought match to one of the best."
The match began with singles action because of the threat of rain in the area. After two straight-set losses at the No. 4 and No. 6 singles positions, junior Anna Sydorska came through with the 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 upset of No. 22 Taylor Ormond.
The final three matches all went to a third set, as TCU dropped each contest. Macall Harkins fell to No. 18 Lenka Broosova by a score of 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, while No. 24 Zuzana Zemenova clinched the match for the Bears with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory over Nina Munch-Soegaard at the top position. Freshman Katariina Tuohimaa fell at the No. 5 position by a score of 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 to Jelena Stanivuk to end singles play.
In doubles action, the 11th-ranked TCU duo of Harkins and Sydorska improved to 3-0 on the season with an 8-2 rout of Jana Bielikova and Karolina Filipiak at the No. 1 position. The Frogs would fall at the remaining slots to lose the doubles point.
TCU will return to action on Sunday at 10 a.m. to play host to No. 16 William & Mary.
