Women’s basketball: UT Dallas 71, Mississippi College 63
The UTD women's basketball team moved into a three-way tie for second place in the American Southwest Conference East Division race with a 71-63 road win over Mississippi College Thursday night.
As a result, the Comets (15-9, 11-8) put themselves in a position to finish with as high as the East Division's No. 2 seed entering next weekend's ASC Championship Tournament in Tyler.
A UTD win over LC and a Mississippi College loss to division-leading UT-Tyler in the regular season finales Saturday would give the Comets the No. 2 seed. The Comets need a win Saturday to avoid the possibility of finishing as the No. 4 seed and having to face undefeated and nationally-ranked Howard Payne in the first round of the tournament.
UTD staged a late run in a tight game against the Lady Choctaws to avenge a 64-58 loss earlier this season. Rachel Addison led four Comets in double figures with 15 points and came up with the basket that put UTD ahead for good (53-52) at the 4:08 mark on the clock. Lauren Hale, who finished with 14 points, then scored 8 points in the game's final minutes as UTD finished on an 18-11 run.
UTD started the game quickly, jumping out to a 21-11 lead, but MC was able to tie the score at halftime, 29-29. The Comets shots a remarkable 61.5 percent (16-of-26) from the field in the second half to break open the tight game. UTD lost the rebounding battle, 44-22, but forced the Lady Choctaws into 24 turnovers with their defense.
It was UTD's fourth straight ASC East victory.
