Frisco ISD to consider letting alternative-education students retain AP status

Frisco ISD is looking into a measure that will allow students who land in alternative education campuses—a.k.a. students temporarily sent to a separate school due to misconduct—to retain their status as "AP" students.

Aaah, the smell of AP test taking. The aroma of freshly sharpened pencils, notebook paper, and a diminished self-concept based on standardized testing.

Advanced Placement (or AP) classes are ones designed for students of a higher calibre, where the curriculum and workload is tougher but students may, given their score on a final exam, receive college credit for their extra effort.

As of now, Frisco ISD strips AP status from students who are made to attend alternative campuses for the semester during the infraction.

Proponents of the measure say truly bright students sometimes have mild behavior problems or simply make mistakes, and that removing them from the courses isn't likely to make things any better.

At the least, Frisco ISD officials will meet to hammer out a policy that works across the board, as some administrators report hearing preferential treatment for some AP students and not others.
