UPDATED: First monthly Pegasus News Showcase this Friday: Done and done
Updated 04:23 p.m., March 1, 2008
UPDATE: Thanks to everyone who showed up last night for our first EVER Pegasus News Music Showcase. All three bands played amazing sets. While the mix of music was eclectic, the night progressed smoothly and the crowd seemed enrapt by the local talent (though I may have been biased... and a little tipsy). If you weren't able to make it down to Dada, don't fear, we will be posting videos of the interviews and the performances to the website soon, as well as broadcasting them on the Dallas iMedia network.
Look for announcements about future showcases soon.

If you've been paying attention to the ads on our site, you might have noticed that we're pushing something called the Pegasus News Showcase. As such, we've gotten a couple of "what the hell is that"s, so let me take a minute to tell you what the hell it is.
As a further effort to cover DFW music we've decided to put together a monthly show that will feature any number of bands from the area. This Friday, February 29th our very first showcase will be held at Club Dada. On the lineup we have Airline, Farstar, and Watching Cars. As part of our partnership with the Dallas iMedia Network, the entire event will be filmed, stage and crowd, including interviews with the bands.
Here's the best part: it's free to Pegasus News registered users who favorite the event. All you have to do is click the link here, which will take you to the event page. Then click on "Add to Favorites" in the sidebar and you will be emailed a free ticket. Registration is free, the ticket is free, the drinks are... well you have to chip in for something, I suppose. The unawares will be charged the standard $5 cover by Beard himself at the door.
Some information on the bands performing:
Airline started back in 2005 with the mission of creating a sound based on roots music that incorporates contemporary influences. Inspired by the eclectic likes of The Kinks, The Beatles, and Wilco, they describe their efforts as "Throwback Rock." In 2006, Airline, led by guitarist/vocalist Robert Holley, released their debut EP Soft Radio. On March 1st, one day after our showcase, mind you, they introduce their sophomore effort and full album, Farewell Republica. You can check out two songs from the upcoming record on their site, "Ulysses (streaming) and "She's Wasted" (video).
Farstar, who have been together since 2001, have received much acclaim from the music community since the release of their debut album, Broken Down and Wandering. They've played various music festivals and label showcases, and songs from Broken Down have been played on radio stations throughout the country, as well as featured in the independent film, Celebrity Cult. They released their latest effort, The Back to Life EP, earlier this month. Their lead singer enjoys wearing bunny ears, as you can see in the picture above.

Seriously, though, I'll let Erin give a fuller answer since this is her baby. She's busy pulling together all the details, so that may be a day or two. But I know it's relevant, because we're so going to start earlier next month ;-)

I'm so glad you asked because it gives my neuroticism a forum.
The plan is to have a different type of showcase each month. This month we have bands that play various kinds of music on the rock spectrum (from acoustic, to more pop infused, to a more alternative sound). While they share enough similarity that the crowd at the showcase won't necessarily feel alienated by one band, they are different enough so when the videos of the night (interviews and performances) are posted as stories on our site it won't be the same exact genre all month long. Next month we might try a showcase based on different types of roots music (celtic/americana/bluegrass), or blues/jazz/soul, punk/metal/industrial, or Hip-Hop/dance/bit-pop.
We'd also like to book bands from different areas in DFW to fully represent our entire music scene. This month two of the bands are from Dallas and one from Denton. Expect in the future to also see Fort Worth bands, Arlington bands, etc. You may have noticed that there aren't any women in this showcase, which was not intended. You'll definitely see a little more estrogen on the stage for future showcases.
We were also interested in bands that had recently released an album or have an upcoming release. And it helps when the bands have the night open.
So yeah, there were a lot of factors, but in the end these bands are just great and they are going to put on a fantastic show. I hope you have a good time if you make it out!

Thanks for the info. It sounds like a great idea!
Airline is a great band, but I won't make the show. My SO's band is playing at the Cavern Friday night.

Mike Orren says:
Dates aren't yet firm, as they are partially dependent on our editing speed -- we're going to be mixing in interview clips as well. We'll be sure to post here when they are going to air. This is our first run, so all subject to change, but the original vision is that each band will get an episode. In a perfect world, each showcase will net 3-4 episodes. We'll also run them here and provide them to the bands in a format they can run on their sites, MySpace, etc.

What a great time!
Even though this was the first showcase we didn't experience any bumps or difficulties on our end.
Thanks for the hard work Erin, Mike, et al! We look forward to seeing the video and playing again for you guys!

Erin can give better detail, but since she's at Mayfest, a quick answer for Michael:
The first one was great, but enough work that we decided to retrench and figure out a better plan for the long haul, which Erin's been doing. I'm thinking it'll be every 6-8 weeks once we're rolling.
Meantime, we're doing some mini-events, filming bands in the West End on Wednesdays in May and June. Those are free too and a lot of fun. This coming Wednesday is Hung Gibson:

Hey Michael,
We are tentatively planning for mid-June. Don't hold me to that, however! All I can promise at this point is there will definitely be another one.
Thanks for inquiring.
