UNT’s FM radio station receives Outstanding Media Award

KNTU, the radio station operated by the University of North Texas at 88.1 on the FM dial, has been recognized by the Emergency Management Association of Texas for their close work with the City of Denton's Office of Emergency Management (OEM) in regard to informing the public in the event of emergency situations. Specifically, the folks at KNTU have been given an Outstanding Media Award.

When an emergency situation (such as a tornado or other severe weather event) appears imminent, KNTU coordinates with Denton's OEM to get the word out. They've actually put this into practice about half a dozen times, and they test the readiness of their on-site Emergency Operations Center (including siren and live broadcast functionality) on a monthly basis. Should the City of Denton's OEM get knocked out, the backup facility at KNTU could fill the gap and get the public informed.

Carry on, valiant broadcast media associates!

I love 88.1. Oh, wait, 88.1 is the frequency we use to broadcast our Sirius radio to the car stereo.

Yeah, it's a great station to listen if you can pick it up every blue moon Tuesday!

Really? Comes in loud and clear for me in East/Central Dallas. KNTU, KHYI, KNON, KERA and Mesquite Schools Radio are all I have on my dial. Well, that and my Ipod frequency.
