Blue Bell has a new ice cream that capitalizes on popularity of cupcakes

Is that cupcake really going into that ice cream?

Is that cupcake really going into that ice cream?

Blue Bell Creameries' official rap as it introduces new flavor Centennial Cupcake Ice Cream is that it's "honoring 4-H as it celebrates over 100 years of successful youth development", and is thus donating a portion of the sales to promote 4-H educational programs. That's nice.

As for what's in the carton, it's a "delicious cake batter ice cream with pieces of yellow cake, a chocolate icing swirl and four-leaf clover sprinkles." Cake batter, you saw that, right? Not cupcake batter. Cake batter. Which is nothing new: There's already Anniversary Cake, and Wedding Cake (which is at my Tom Thumb though I can't find a real link on it anywhere), and they did a Cake Batter last year. It seems like this is about capitalizing on the current trendiness of cupcakes. A photo of which would be far more appealing on the carton than those 4H munchkins.

So, a purchase of this cupcake ice cream doesn't involve a dozen tiny little cartons of regular cake flavored ice cream? Because that would be way cute.

Akira Sato Jazz trumpeter Akira Sato, by way of Tokyo, Japan and Vancouver, Canada, is an SMU faculty member and director of The Meadow Jazz Orchestra at SMU. He is also an adjunct faculty member at UNT where he teaches jazz arranging. Sato is also heading into the studio soon with other area musicians and playing at the Scat Jazz Lounge tonight. With all that he's up to, the least you could do is order a Scotch on the rocks and chill to some tunes. (Photo by flickr user arteunporro. More info
