DALLAS Dallas County Judge Jim Foster will sponsor a resolution declaring February 24-March 1, 2008 as "Severe Weather Awareness Week" in Dallas County in cooperation with the National Weather Service and the Governor's Division of Emergency Management.
"I'm proud to be part of this annual campaign to remind Dallas County residents about the potential dangers of Texas weathers, especially as we head into the spring storm season," said Foster.
The goal of Severe Weather Awareness Week is not only to educate new residents and new generations about the dangers of the extreme Texas weather, but also to remind residents to update their emergency plans, double check emergency supply kits and to be prepared for tornadoes, floods, hail, straight-line windstorms and other potentially dangerous events.
"Every Dallas County resident needs a plan in the event of severe weather and now is the time to develop one," he said.
Dallas County Director of Security and Emergency Management Robie Robinson agreed saying public campaigns like Severe Weather Week help spread the message of the dangerous weather and the need for preparation.
"Severe weather is our number one hazard and it causes more loss of life and property damage than any other hazard," said Robinson.

Akira Sato Jazz trumpeter Akira Sato, by way of Tokyo, Japan and Vancouver, Canada, is an SMU faculty member and director of The Meadow Jazz Orchestra at SMU. He is also an adjunct faculty member at UNT where he teaches jazz arranging. Sato is also heading into the studio soon with other area musicians and playing at the Scat Jazz Lounge tonight. With all that he's up to, the least you could do is order a Scotch on the rocks and chill to some tunes. (Photo by flickr user arteunporro. More info

I think most Texans are aware we live in a severe weather area. I would be more inclined to have Commissioner's Courts to install safety devices rather than make proclamations.
Example: Our Court in Denton County doesn't believe we need tornado sirens along Hwy 380, because we should just buy weather radios. The other reason is that our new homes are built so well, we wouldn't hear the sirens outside. Yes, Cynthia White said that. I kid you not. I don't know what world she lives in, but if I can hear the bass in a car driving by my house, I am pretty sure I will hear the blaring siren.
