The AFI Dallas International Film Festival, which kicks off its second annual round of screenings and events on March 27, announced that they're adding two new filmmaker award categories this year: one for Best Texas Film and one for Best Earth Friendly Film.

Sponsored by MPS Studios and Current Energy respectively, the two new categories join the ranks of existing awards for Best Narrative Feature (sponsored by Target to the tune of $25K), Best Documentary (also Target; also $25K) and the HDNet Award (sponsored by - you guessed it - HDNet, for $10K).

The Texas Filmmaker Award encourages and promotes Texas filmmaking by showcasing both short and feature-length films shot in Texas; the award winner will receive $20K in cash, goods and services.

The Earth Friendly Award trumpets films and filmmakers that "best communicate the importance of environmental sustainability through the art of film." Along with the trumpeting comes $10K in cash.

Says Michael Caine, Artistic Dir. and CEO of AFI Dallas: "Both of these awards are tangible demonstrations of our continuing commitment to join with wonderful sponsors like Current Energy and MPS Studios – of course, led by our presenting sponsor Target – to both support our filmmakers and shine a light on the ability of filmmakers to create something singular through their art that can impact our lives beyond simple entertainment.”
