UT Arlington softball dropped its Southland Conference opener 3-2 at Texas State on Tuesday night.

Katie Garnett (4-3) picked up the win for the Bobcats (7-9, 1-0 SLC) while Laura Jones (1-4) took the loss for the Mavericks (3-7, 0-1 SLC).

Texas State got on the board first in the second inning, after a pair of lead-off singles and a sacrifice put runners in scoring position with only one out. Kristina Tello hit a grounder down the third base line that scored Ashton Peters. With Tello on second and Jill Kloesel on third, both runners came home when Ryan Kos singled to put Texas State up 3-0.

The Mavericks got a run back in the fifth when Katie Jones reached on an error before Amanda Swofford and Brittany Washington followed with back-to-back doubles.

In the sixth the Mavs led off the inning with a pair of singles before a sacrifice from Brittany Stevens put runners at second and third with one out. Katie Jones followed with a single up the middle plating Christina Allen to cut the lead to 3-2.

Laura Jones went the distance for UTA, allowing no earned runs on seven hits while walking one.

Texas State and UTA will conclude the series on Wednesday with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. at Bobcat Field.
