IRVING Thursday, the Dallas Cowboys moved to keep three of their restricted free agents, putting tenders on Pro Bowl running back Marion Barber, defensive end Chris Canty and guard Joe Berger.
Marion Barber III had a breakout season, and despite not starting a single game all year was voted to the Pro Bowl on the strength of his smash-mouth, downhill running game. An attacking back, his style of play was very different from starting running back Julius Jones, who had a down year and has not yet been given a contract by the Cowboys.
Defensive end Chris Canty also had a good year, making several highlight-reel tackles and collecting a career-high 3.5 sacks. Berger filled in as a guard on one of the league's top offensive lines last season.
Barber's offer was for $2.56 million, the highest of the three. Canty was offered $2.017 million, while Berger's tender was for $927,000.
Running back Tyson Thompson, who lost his job as a kick returner late in the season, was not tendered, freeing him to sign wherever he wants. Thompson, originally from Irving, impressed former coach Bill Parcells enough for a roster spot, but apparently did not go down so well with Wade Phillips.
Barber and Canty can still look around for better deals, but a team would have to give Dallas its first- and third-round picks to get Barber and a first-rounder for Canty. Dallas also would first have a week to match any offer.

He is also an adjunct faculty member at UNT where he teaches jazz arranging. Sato is also heading into the studio soon with other area musicians and playing at the Scat Jazz Lounge tonight. With all that he's up to, the least you could do is order a Scotch on the rocks and chill to some tunes. (Photo by flickr user arteunporro. More info
