The UT Arlington men's basketball team closed out the home portion of its schedule with a 79-65 loss against Sam Houston State in a Southland Conference game at Texas Hall.

The Mavericks, who had one of their best seasons in school history in defense of their home court, couldn't calm a hot-shooting Bearkats bunch and couldn't erase an early deficit. Sam Houston (20-6, 8-5) was 7-for-18 from the 3-point line (38.9 percent) and 28-for-31 from the free-throw line. The Bearkats hit their first 22 free throws before finally missing late in the second half.

By that time, UT Arlington's 18.2 percent shooting from the 3-point line had already cost it a chance to climb in the league standings. The Mavericks were outrebounded, 44-34, and hit just 17 of 32 free throws.

UTA (17-10, 6-8), which finished the year 14-3 at home, will now have to win at least one game on the road to secure a spot in the SLC Tournament scheduled March 13-16 in Houston. The Mavericks were helped by Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Texas State losses on Wednesday and stand in 7th place in the league seedings. UTA still has a game remaining in the season finale against Texas State in San Marcos.

First, UTA will travel to Nacogdoches for a 6 p.m. game Saturday against Stephen F. Austin.

Against the Bearkats on Wednesday, UTA fell behind 28-15 midway through the first half after a 14-2 Sam Houston run. In that spurt, the Bearkats got three-pointers by Ryan Bright, Jeremy Thomas and Ashton Mitchell.

Sam Houston held onto an eight-point lead at halftime, but an 8-2 Sam Houston run to open the second half put the Mavericks into catch-up mode. UTA got the score within 13 points at 72-59 with 3:36 left but could get no closer.

DeLuis Ramirez led the Bearkats with 15 points and 11 rebounds.

UTA got 13 points from Jermaine Griffin and 10 from Rod Epps.
