Happy Texas Independence Day weekend!
If you are reading this e-mail, you're already a registered Pegasus News user, but did you realize that your user profile has changed? It's easier than ever to let your friends know about your favorite restaurants, bands, and upcoming events -- like the first-ever Pegasus News Music Showcase. For guest list action, make it a favorite by noon and you're in like Flynn. It's one of many ways to waste time, er, uh ... enhance your profile. Who knows? You might just win something.
Otherwise, it's the last day for early voting in the primary election. Pretty please, exercise your right to vote this Tuesday, March 4.
Ways we're currently bribing you to spend more time with us
You've got until noon to claim a free ticket to tonight's showcase ... We've given away one of the grand prizes, but there's still twelve prizes left to win between now and Tuesday in our Savor Dallas contest ... We gave away Joe Ely tickets this week and there's still lots more to come in the next week ...
Metro
Presidential campaigning reached a fever pitch, with local visits by Bill Clinton and Barack Obama. In local politics, Minnie profiled a Farmers Branch mayoral hopeful who (gasp!) likes Latinos. Dallas councilman James Fantroy may be on his sick bed, but he's not off the hook for embezzling. Southlake cops have managed to stay above the fray. Meanwhile, if you want to sue someone in Plano, it will have to wait 'til Tuesday. Dallas Progress reports on pastor and breast cancer survivor Dr. Sheron Patterson kicking off a campaign for health and housing this Saturday. Grits for Breakfast discusses an innocent man's post-incarceration assimilation to life in Carrollton. We're also thrilled to welcome a new Cowtown content partner, West and Clear.
Gigs
In case you missed it (where have you been?) our staff will venture beyond Pegasus News World Headquarters tonight for our first-ever music showcase at Club Dada. The event will also be videotaped for the Dallas iMedia Network. We hope to see you there. Meanwhile, save yourself the roadtrip to Austin and check out Erin's guide to 100+ bands passing through town this month on their way to and fro' SXSW.
Overheard on the comment boards
- reynardine on Tollway speed limits may increase, thanks to long-delayed speed study: "Another thought: does this mean tickets given in the past on the 190 are invalid? Are previously victimized drivers entitled to a refund? Hmm...class actions suit!"...
- pnewsgal pnewsgal on WFAA dominates all but one newscast race in February sweeps: "Channel 8 used to be my favorite choice for news and weather. Then switched to Channel 5. But have since lost faith in all media outlets...except for Pegasus of course. Thank gawd for the plethera of information provided here otherwise I'd be Soooo uninformed...fuh-sure "just the right amount of news, humor, and banter"!" ...
- James Scott on Second branch of Spiral Diner finally opens in Dallas’ Bishop Arts: "And for those of you that are thinking just tofu and grass when you see "vegetarian" or "vegan", this is about as far away from that as you can imagine (also, for those of you that think of Cosmic Cafe, i.e., mostly international flavors). Philly Cheesesteaks, Chopped Barbecue, Club sandwiches. They have a huge menu of unique items, as well as your usual goto diner-type stuff. Plus, yes, this is Spiral Diner & Bakery, meaning they have great pies, cakes, cookies - get the peanut-butter cup - it's ridiculous."...
The Biz
Willie Nelson's new place at Carl's Corner is almost finished, in the best sense of the word. Fluor is doing business in Spain. The local healthcare claims market was shaken up. EDS is doing business with neutral overlords. Finally, Flowserve got hit with millions in fines for aiding Saddam.
Dining
Starbucks introduced a new flavor, and taught its employees a new m.o. After months of anticipation, Dallas got a vegan restaurant. TG tasted Pellegrino's not-so-sweet Italian soda. Also, it may interest you to know that we're giving away more than $7,000 in Savor Dallas prize packages.
Sporting Chances
In this week's Cupcheck, Todd predicts hockey glory. The Stars acquired one of the top players in the NHL. And the Mavs' new guy earns his keep.
Stage and Scene
John Garcia reviews the Uptown Players' Bare. He also co-hosts The Column Awards Monday in Plano (where Pegasus staffers will be on hand to tape highlights for our site and the Dallas iMedia Network). Mark-Brian Sonna saw Theatre Three's Crimes of the Heart and Echo Theatre's Daisy in the Dreamtime. Shawn spotlights the director of a Shakespearean play set in post-Katrina New Orleans. Meanwhile Laura rounds up the can't-miss gallery events this weekend.
Flix
Our film guy reviews Charlie Bartlett and Be Kind, Rewind, while Alex weighs in on Vantage Point. You can also check out John's red-carpet coverage of the 40th Anniversary screening of George Romero's Night of the Living Dead, and Pegasus users' takes on all-day Oscar-watching marathons in Arlington and Dallas.
