Women’s basketball: Louisiana-Lafayette 68, UNT 63

0

The Ragin’ Cajuns survived a late storm from the North Texas women’s basketball team, downing the Mean Green 68-63 at the Earl K. Long Gymnasium on Wednesday.

The Ragin’ Cajuns (7-21, 3-14) surged out to a quick 10-point lead and weathered a late Mean Green run that saw the lead dwindle to just two points in the second.

North Texas (13-16, 8-9) had its post game working in the second with Erica Howard and Talicia Sanders on the low block. Howard hit a dagger of a 3-pointer to trim the Cajun lead to two points, while Sanders had one of the finest offensive performances of her career. Sanders racked up 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting to go with eight rebounds.

ULL countered with the post play of Courtney Ratliff and Sonora Edwards. Both players registered double-doubles, Edwards with 16 points and 16 boards, and Edwards not far behind with 14 and 10.

NT had the low post game working, but the Mean Green guards couldn’t find a groove for much of the game. North Texas guards wend 3-of-16 from the floor in the opening half, but Brittney James rebounded for a team-high 15 points.

The Cajuns took out a season’s worth of frustrations out on the Mean Green in the first half. ULL lead by as much as 11 points, and headed into the locker room with a 36-25 advantage.

North Texas returns to action on Saturday at New Orleans at 5 p.m. followed by the Mean Green men at 7 p.m.
