The Center for Public Policy and Social Research's annual ranking of the 69 most literate cities in the U.S. ranks Austin first in Texas (23rd). Fort Worth (45), Dallas (tied with Jacksonville, Florida at 47.5), and Plano (51) are slightly more literate than last year, but still no great shakes. Arlington at 62nd is also slightly improved, but still the least-literate city in north Texas. Elsewhere in the state, Houston held steady at 55th and San Antonio ranked 63rd. Corpus Christi (65th) and El Paso (68th) were our state's least-literate.

Cities of 250,000 people or larger were rated based on newspaper circulation, library resources, periodical resources, the number of bookstores, Internet access, and educational attainment.
