New product in Dallas stores: Snickers Nut ‘N Butter Crunch

Whatchya doin? Nuttin, honey.
Whatchya doin? Nuttin, honey.

Who started the 'N thing, anyway? It seems like it was Kellogg's Nut 'N Honey cereal in the late '80s, whose ad campaign was a gold mine for anyone who likes dumb humor. ("What are you making?" "Nut 'N Honey.") Anyway, the 'N seems to be the main driver behind this Snickers Nut 'n Butter Crunch limited edition spin-off, with milk chocolate, peanuts, and a subtly-flavored peanut butter nougat.

Not to say that this is not a worthy candy bar. It's similar to and possibly even better than a regular Snickers bar. The PB nougat replaces the caramel of a Snickers -- A+ news if you're not a fan of Snickers' stiff-chewy caramel. The PB nougat still has a mild chewiness but it's not as grinding to the teeth; basically this is a Snickers but with a slightly lighter, less-likely-to-pull-out-your-fillings texture, and that's good. But it's so similar that you have to wonder why they'd bother. Is the entire shtick the dumbness of the name?

This was originally scheduled to come out in November 2007 until manufacturer Mars (who changed their name back to Mars Snackfood after briefly dallying with calling themselves "Masterfoods") did an impromptu quickie release before unfurling this official roll-out. Earlier this year, it released the limited-edition (and less appealing) dark-chocolate Snickers. The big candy companies have become so much more nimble these days.

Personally, I prefer my Snickers with a layer of whipped apple juice and baby apples.

So, like, when are you re-doing the countertops? Or are the walls to be re-spackled first?

a note from Collin Gebhard, too shy to post a comment of his own but eager to share:

Hi Teresa,

We really enjoyed reading your January 2nd blog post, New product in Dallas stores: Snickers Nut 'N Butter Crunch, and had an opportunity to link to it in our January 7th blog post, Brand Naming: Snickers Nut 'n Butter Crunch Pretty Sweet, where we discussed the use of the " 'N " branding technique. Our blog discusses marketing, naming, and branding from a linguistic and strategic perspective.

Thank you, Teresa, and continued success with Pegasus News. It's a very resourceful and well-written site.
