The nickname of course was 'sh*ttyplace' but it was the closest theater to Deep Ellum and an easy bike ride over there.

The Loews/AMC Cityplace pretty much became a dinosaur the day The Grand opened back in the late 90s, the thug neighbors,new gentrification on the other side of 75 and the opening of the Magnolia only put the icing on the proverbial cake. I work at a business behind said theater and have witnessed both the punk kids from the local school, as well as their thug parents, tear up the property from time to time with no regard or respect for others.

Finally! The last of the horrible theaters are gone...at least in this area. I stopped going to Loews Cityplace over 6 years ago. I'm sure that most people won't be sad to see it go.

I did like that it was close as well except there was a high quantity of talkers during the movies at that theater.

Today's DMN reports Cityplace Theater sold to Inland American Communities to be redeveloped as mixed use with retail on ground floor and apartment above. These are the guys doing all the Cityville developments around town.

I can recall a time when living "upstairs" over a store or business was something you did until you found a steady job. The sad thing about so many Yankee's coming to the Dallas area is that they want to bring their crappy lifestyle with them. Why not start building apartments inside the mall?

Ed, im all for more urban living. Hell, I live in Ellum and make a decent piece of change, so id appreciate leaving my crappy lifestyle alone lol ;)

In all seriousness, the property in question has become a massive, underperforming joke. Anything is better than whats on it now.

Thank heavens someone still sees the humor in stereotypes. Frankly, most Texans don't give a damn how they do things up north.

A parking lot, that's what they need a parking lot. There's urban living (New York Style) and then there's urban living Texas style. People who thought "Friends" represented reality will probably choose the former rather than the later. One of the reasons that the city and sundry other villains are "running off the clubs in Ellum" appears to be that someone discovered real estate on the property. Real estate that might be more productively repurposed (don't you just love words like that) to creating a "Friends" theme park residential community. Mark my words, parking, and car burglary and vandalism will be the first bitches once the "lofts" or whatever are built. No sweat, Austin's doing the same thing. The corduroy jacket with patched elbows crowd moved in thinking it would make them look "cool", and the first thing they did was start complaining about the noise and bustle that made Austin cool in the first place!

The differences between Austin and dallas is that the neighbors off and on 6th acutally support their neighborhood with decent bars, restaurants and performance venues, not to mention community supported events all week long (ex: great community farmers market on sat. mornings, neighborhood walks, ect..) and police involvement on weekends. Ellum pretty much has been having issues due to the lack of those things. Id love to see more neighborhood spots in my neck of the woods, theres tons of old gas/service stations down on commerce and main, someone needs to invest the resources and start building decent indoor/outdoor bars/restaurants down in ellum to attract not just the neighbors, but the yokels from the suburban sticks as well.
