SMU announced it will scrap its Mustangs mascot in favor of the more fearsome Rainbow Unicorns
DALLAS The Southern Methodist University Mustangs were interviewing Hawaii head coach June Jones for their own head coaching vacany Saturday, months after canning their previous coach Phil Bennett midway through the season. Jones was able to turn around the Hawaii football program in nine years, reaching a BCS bowl this year.
Jones, famous for a shouting match with coach-killer quarterback Jeff George that led to his dismissal as head coach of the Atlanta Falcons, went 19-29 with the Falcons before heading to the college ranks. In 1999, he took the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors, 0-12 in their previous season, to 9-4, the biggest single season turnaround in NCAA history.
Jones has a 75-41 record at Hawaii, including 12-0 this season before getting blown out in the Sugar Bowl.
