SMU men’s swimming and diving splits meet at Arizona

The No. 24 SMU men's swimming team won three events Friday, beating Washington (147-115) but falling to No. 4 Arizona (149-111). The Mustangs finished in the top four in every event.

Alex Hetland won both the 100 and 200 breaststroke events. Hetland bested Arizona by over a second in the 100 breast, finishing the course in 56.10. The 200 breast was closer, but Hetland edged Arizona by just over half a second, touching the wall in 2:03.91.

The relays also had strong showings, with the 200 free relay team of Shane Milu, Thomas Fadnes, Luke Vrtovec and Pontus Renholm coming in first in 1:23.05. The 200 medley relay of Renholm, Hetland, Brett Denham and Fadnes finished second, touching the wall in 1:31.29.

Chris Ginder finished fourth in the 1000 free, stopping the clock in 9:48.23, just one one-hundredth of a second behind the third-place finisher. Milu took fourth in the 200 free, touching the wall in 1:42.19, while Renholm finished second in the 100 back (49.87). Nate Clark took fourth in the 200 fly, clocking a time of 1:56.54. Vrtovec and Fadnes finished three-four in the 50 free with Vrotovec touching the wall in 20.96 and Fadnes stopping the clock at 21.26. Fadnes also took fourth in the 100 free, finishing the course in 46.57.

Renholm finished second in the 200 back, swimming a time of 1:48.70. Maverick Smalley took third in the 500 free in 4:35.36 and Denham took third in the 100 fly (51.78). Hetland placed second in the 200 IM, touching the wall in 1:55.29, while Smalley finished fourth in 1:56.25.

The Mustangs are back in action next Friday and Saturday, Jan. 11-12 as they host Northwestern, Arizona State and Southern California in the Classic @ SMU at 7:30pm both nights.
