New on DVD: 3:10 To Yuma, Death Sentence and Joshua
Several notable 2007 films make their DVD premiere this week, including the ambitious remake of Elmore Leonard's western classic 3:10 To Yuma, which pits Russell Crowe's sneering bad guy Ben Wade against Christian Bale's stiff-legged good guy Dan Evans. Most critics liked it better than I did.
Next up is the underrated revenge thriller Death Sentence, which I liked better than most critics thanks to the heart of absolute darkness transplanted into the Brian Garfield source material by director James Wan.
Last but by no means least comes the indie bad-apple demon-child story Joshua, which finds Sam Rockwell and screen wife Vera Farmiga menaced by one of the cleverest little evil SOBs you'll likely ever encounter (played by newcomer Jacob Kogan).
