Dallas Contemporary announces John Pomara and Ludwig Schwarz as artist co-chairs for 7th Annual Wish! Auction

A past recipient of the Contemporary Legends Award, Pomara is a well-respected painter, professor and curator. Schwarz is best known for his inventive jewelry designs and paintings.

The Dallas Contemporary is pleased to announce John Pomara and Ludwig Schwarz as this year’s artist co-chairs for the Dallas Contemporary 2008 Wish! Auction. A past recipient of the Contemporary Legends Award, Pomara is a well-respected painter, professor and curator. Schwarz is best known for his inventive jewelry designs and paintings.

“Wish! Auction raises money for an amazing space that will give young artists an opportunity to show in a national context. We are honored to support this annual fundraising event,” Pomara remarked. “Ludwig and I see the potential of the new space. Wish! is more than just an auction. It is about having a space in Dallas to show young emerging artists and how essential it is for young careers to develop.”

Dallas Contemporary’s Wish! Auction is gaining national attention for its exceptional art for auction. In the July 2007 article of The Wall Street Journal, Lauren A.E. Schuker mentioned Dallas Contemporary as a “well-regarded museum” where you can find “great art for less.” This year’s blueprint-themed auction is sure to be an exciting year for art enthusiasts and collectors featuring artists such as John Pomara, Ludwig Schwarz, Roger Winter, Robert Rauchenburg, Vincent Falsetta, Linnea Glatt, Nick Gaetano, Noah Simblist, George Tobolowsky and many more.

“I am proud to see Pomara and Schwarz take leading roles in the Dallas art community,” Dallas Contemporary director Joan Davidow said. “It was 17 years ago that I first showed their artwork when they were budding talents, and now they are helping others to get their start here.”

As a new addition, guests are invited to explore the 20th Century Design furniture and Wish! art exhibition at the Premiere Peek party on Thursday, January 31, to get the first look at the art up for auction. Throughout the evening, Inter.sect Art Collective will generate real time visual interpretations using mobile phone technology. Video, still imagery, and sound pieces dealing with presence, location, and translation will be projected on the walls of the gallery as six artists enliven the crowd and create an unforgettable setting for the night.

Led by Auction Chair Eve Reid and Peek Chair Brooke Hortenstine, committee members getting the party in gear include Suzanne and David Droese, Todd Fiscus and Rob Dailey, Ashley and Corey Emerson, Joyce and Tim Goss, Dee Dee and Hale Hoak, Brooke and Blake Hortenstine, Lisa and John Runyon, Kim and Justin Whitman, and Lucy and Steve Wrubel.

“We want visitors to have fun at this exciting, crowd-pleasing event and walk out with contemporary art under their arms. Wish! is a great opportunity to begin or enhance your contemporary art collection,” said Davidow.

Wish! Auction 2008 is presented by Sotheby’s, Formica Corporation, DFW Area Mercedes-Benz Dealers, PaperCity Magazine and GEORGE Catering. The event begins at 7 p.m. and the Live Auction commences at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, February 2. Guests are invited to participate in the Paddles Up portion of the Live Auction by raising their paddles to contribute to the Capital Campaign for Dallas Contemporary’s future art space on 161 Glass Street and Industrial Boulevard opening in fall 2009.

Tickets to Premiere Peek are $40/$50 for non- members. Wish! Auction tickets are $125/$150 for non- members. For ticket information, contact events@thecontemporary.net or call 214.821.2522.
