Faced with the introduction of a new Hershey's cookie product, you might say, Hmm, I feel like I've seen a LOT of Hershey's cookie items. So many that I've begun to lose track of what's been introduced already, and can no longer distinguish one from the other. You might further feel disheartened by Hershey's initiative to brand-extend its candy into non-candy categories such as cookies that don't do them justice.
I feel your pain. Anyway, there's a new one: Hershey's Layered Cookies, a cookie sandwich with cocoa-y chocolate cookies enclosing two fillings: 1. a milk chocolate cream and 2. a "smooth creamy filling" that varies by cookie. LIST!
- 1. Hershey's layered cookie = white cream
- 2. Reese's layered cookie = peanut butter
- 3. Heath layered cookie = toffee
While edible, these are, in the end, just second-rate Oreos. Except that they're very small; the actual cookie square isn't much bigger than a Triscuit.
They're almost identical to a cookie line that Hershey's introduced in 2005, except that those were coated in chocolate. These are not.
Hershey's has been experimenting with cookies for a while now. It started in the early 2000s after Richard Lenny joined Hershey; the first CEO hired from "outside," he came from Nabisco Biscuit and Snacks and brought along many ex-Nabisco-ites with him. The problem with most of the Hershey cookie items that have come out is that none have been particularly good. All they're selling is novelty.

I sense a cookie conspiracy. That product looks eerily similar to the cookies they sold in boxes in larger quantities that have been subsequently discontinued. Hmmmm.
