For the second time this season, the SMU women have swept the C-USA Swimmer and Diver of the Week awards, as announced by the conference Wednesday. Junior swimmer Petra Klosova picked up her first honor of the season, while freshman diver Audra Egenolf won her second.
Klosova, the reigning C-USA Swimmer of the Year, competed for the Mustangs at the European Short Course Championships Dec. 13-16, 2007. She swam in the 100m freestyle, the 100m IM, the 50m backstroke and the 50m freestyle. She qualified for the semifinals in the 100m back, but placed just outside the finals. Most recently, Klosova won the 100-yard freestyle at No. 1 Georgia, swimming a 50.54, good for NCAA consideration. She was also a member of the 400-yard freestyle relay team which beat Georgia and qualified for NCAA consideration with a time of 3:22.88. The weekly award is the first for Klosova in 2007-08 and fourth of her career.
Egenolf faced stiff competition at the Georgia Diving Invitational. In the one-meter board prelims, Egenolf scored 264.60, putting her in fourth place going into the finals. During the finals she boosted her score to 277.80 to take third place, less than three points behind the event-winner from Purdue. The three-meter board prelims saw much of the same, with Egenolf scoring 270.75, good for fifth. She turned in a consistent performance in the finals, again scoring 270.75, taking fifth place for the competition. Egenolf saved her best performance for last, winning silver in the platform finals with a score of 255.90, just six-and-a-half points behind the gold medalist from LSU. After her performance at the Georgia Diving Invitational, Egenolf went on to win both the one-meter and three-meter boards in a dual-meet against No. 1 Georgia, scoring 264.60 on the one-meter (almost 30 points better than the second-place finisher) and 270.75 on the three-meter. This is Egenolf's second weekly honor in 2007-08.
The Mustang women are back in action this Saturday, Jan. 12, taking on No. 6 Texas A&M and No. 2 Auburn in College Station.
